Regis Celebrates Inspirational Leaders
At the start of Catholic Schools Week, the University of St. Thomas hosted the fourth annual Archdiocesan Essay Contest Awards Day on Monday, January 28. From more than 2000 essays submitted by 32 schools, 16 Regis students won awards for their essays written on the theme “Recognizing a Leader of Faith and Character Who Also Lights the Way.”
The morning began with Daniel Cardinal DiNardo presiding at a liturgy concelebrated by priests of the archdiocese. Alexandre Thirouin, representing The Regis School, participated in the opening candlelight procession of students. Cardinal DiNardo, Sister Kevina Keating, Superintendent of Catholic Schools, and Dr. Robert Ivany, the President of the University of St. Thomas, presented the awards to each student who placed in the competition.

Matthew Leibold won third place in the third- through fifth-grade division for honoring fellow fourth-grader Guillermo Amtmann.
Three Regis students tied for second place for the sixth- through eighth-grade division, including: eighth-grader Troy Harrington for honoring Headmistress Dr. Nancy Taylor; eighth-grader Alex Ubaldo for honoring P.E. teacher and coach Gary Holub; and seventh-grader Sam Milhollin for honoring religion teacher Dorothy Monsarrat. Another three Regis eighth-graders placed in third — Tres Guidry, Sebastian Maaraoui and Javier Chavarria — each honoring Dorothy Monsarrat.
The following students earned honorable mention: third-graders Hank Bond and Oscar Melendez; fourth-graders William Reed and Alex Donnenberg; seventh-graders Scot Freysinger, Talal Beidas and Stephan Salas; and eighth-graders Paul Thirouin and Norman Jolly.
