Eighth Grade Milestones

Middle School is divided into four Houses: Armor, Helmet, Shield and Sword.

Each House will have a duty that will last a quarter of the year, and then changes each quarter until all Houses have served the four major duties assignments.

While demerits will not be given to Houses, Merit points awarded in games, events and competitions by each individual House can be withheld if duties are not preformed up to the school’s or Dean’s standards.

Each Grade has their own trait to work towards: Grade 5 Self Discipline, Grade 6 Commitment, Grade 7 Service and Grade 8 Leadership.

Regis partners with Grand Classroom to coordinate a four day trip to Washington, D.C.  The trip typically occurs in April.  Details are shared approximately 12 months before travel.  Parents pay Grand Classroom directly.

A typical itinerary includes stops such as:

• Arlington National Cemetery
• Smithsonian Museum
• United States Holocaust Memorial Museum
• Lincoln's Assassination Tour
• Manassas National Battlefield
• Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception
• Jefferson, FDR, MLK and WWII Memorials
• Lincoln, Vietnam and Korean Memorials
• River trip at Antietam
   

 

• Any Eighth Grade Student with excellent grades and good conduct may apply for a placement within the Sacred Heart Schools network.
• The placement may last up to a week, but the Regis Student is responsible for all his Regis school work and the schoolwork at the receiving Sacred Heart school.
• The Student must wear their Regis uniform or the uniform of the receiving school.
• The Student must pay for all the travel expenses and any others that occur during the trip.
• A background check is suggested and can be arranged by the Regis Business Office at the requestor’s cost.
• A video or Zoom interview between families is suggested as well so that all parties have the opportunity to ask questions and make decisions.
• Participating schools include Sacred Heart Chicago, Sacred Heart San Francisco and Princeton Academy.

Service Hours are encouraged, but not required for eighth grade students. Students who earn service hours at the following levels will be acknowledged at the end of the year.

• 25 hours: Knight of St. Philippine Duchesne
• 50 hours: Knight of St. Madeleine Sophie Barat
• 75 hours: Knight of St. John Francis Regis 

Throughout the first semester of eighth grade, Regis faculty offer a test preparation course for all interested students. The course is typically held on Saturday mornings throughout the fall. In December, Regis sponsors a practice ISEE test during the school day for all eighth grade students. 

As requested, the Regis Director of Admission & Enrollment Management meets with eighth grade students to discuss and prepare for the high school admissions interview. 

Regis faculty and administrators complete recommendation forms as requested, and the Regis registrar submits all recommendations and transcripts to the prospective high schools on behalf of the Regis students. 

Regis students are encouraged to visit local high schools and participate in open houses and shadow days. As a class, students also participate in group tours offered and invited by local high schools. Regis eighth grade students also have an opportunity to speak with recent Regis graduates to learn tips for making a successful transition from Regis to high school. 

Decision Release Date:  This date is up to the high school, but most HAIS (Houston Association of Independent Schools) release their decision no later than the Friday before Spring Break.

Common Reply Date:  This date is up to the high school, but most HAIS (Houston Association of Independent Schools) members request a reply by March 31.

Each high school has specific requirements for admission.  Check their website for details on their application requirements.  In general, these areas are critical elements to all applications for high school admission.

In late spring, students take high school placement tests for mathematics. Ms. Weikel prepares Algebra I review packets for the boys to use as an additional review tool to prepare for those assessments.

The Graduation Ceremony typically begins at approximately 4:00 p.m. Students should arrive by 3:30 p.m. for their class portrait.  Exact times and details will be shared via email in late spring.

In April, you will receive a set of Graduation invitations to distribute to family and friends. You will be asked to rsvp for your invited guests via an online form in late spring.

Baccalaureate All School Mass is held at 8:00 a.m. with a small, informal reception for parents and graduates immediately following.

In early April, you will receive an email with a form from Sonya Gilmore, Registrar & Database Manager, asking you to indicate how you want your son's name to be written on his diploma and in the program as well as his high school of choice.

In late March, each Eighth Grade student will be asked to fill out a Yearbook "interview" form (sincerely, not jokingly) via email. Additionally, we  typically include one photo of each of our eighth grade students when they were about 3 years old (regardless of if they were at Regis in 3 Pre-K or not) with each of their interviews in the yearbook. This information is compiled by Yearbook Staffers for the annual school Yearbook. 

In mid-April, each graduating class takes a photo wearing their future high school sweatshirt or shirt. The photo is taken immediately after assembly on the bleachers, weather permitting. Students wear regular uniform shorts/bottoms and his high school shirt or sweatshirt. The specific date will populate on your Veracross calendar closer to the scheduled photo shoot.
 

In late spring, each eighth grade student will take a photo with their Regis little brother.  These photos are typically taken immediately after morning assembly.  

This is a typical exam week schedule for general planning purposes only.  Please note that your son will receive detailed communication from his teachers during the fourth quarter about the specifics of his exam schedule.

• Graduation Ceremony begins at 4:00pm. Valet will begin in the Milestones Carpool line for all families starting at 3:15 p.m. Students should arrive by 3:30 p.m. for their class portrait.
   

*Final Exam Exemption: As an eighth grade privilege, qualifying eighth grade students may exempt up to two exams if they meet the following criteria.

• Have a cumulative average of 93 or above for the year in the class
• Have never received a conduct grade less than an “S” in the class 
• Have obtained signatures of both the teacher and Mr. Farnie by the deadline (typically the week before exams)
• The Final Exam Exemption Form will be available the first week of May
