Prior to Arriving at School
- Parents should assess their son each morning to make sure he does not have any symptoms fitting COVID-19. Although temperature checks will occur each morning for each student when they arrive to campus, we also encourage parents to check their child’s temperature at home too. Faculty and staff will be required to check their own temperature daily before arriving on campus. Administration, faculty, staff and school nurses will have infrared thermometers for temperature checks in the morning and spot checking students and each other throughout the day.
- If a student, faculty or staff member has any of the symptoms listed for COVID-19, s/he should stay home until s/he is symptom-free. These symptoms include: cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, chills, repeated shaking with chills, muscle pain, nausea or vomiting, headache, sore throat, loss of taste or smell, diarrhea or feeling feverish or a measured temperature greater than or equal to 100.0 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Staying home if you have strong reason to believe your symptoms could be related to the virus will not be penalized on attendance records. Please err on the side of caution and use wise judgment at all times.
Deciding when to stay home
*Note: If you are aware of the possibility that someone in your family has had contact with a person who tests positive, check here about the types of contact to take note of: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/if-you-are-sick/steps-when-sick.html
PPE Requirements for Students, Faculty & Staff
-
All students (Pre-K through 8th Grade), faculty and staff will be required to wear masks throughout the day with the exception of lunch/snack time, outdoor recess and P.E. class (if held outdoors). Masks should not have an exhalation valve. Regis Spirit Wear will have Regis masks in student and adult sizes available for purchase: https://regisspiritwear.square.site/
-
Students should have their masks on before they exit their cars at morning drop-off. Any student exiting a car without a mask will be asked to put their mask on immediately.
-
If a student forgets his personal mask one day, a disposable one will be given to him in the morning carpool line for use that day.
Morning & Afternoon Carpool
MORNING CARPOOL + TEMP CHECK - EARLY CHILDHOOD & KINDERGARTEN
For students in 3 Pre-K, 4 Pre-K and Kindergarten, carpool will take place in the Milestone Carpool Line beginning at 7:30AM. Older siblings with younger brothers in these grade levels are allowed to be dropped off in the Milestones line as well. Student temperatures will be checked in the Milestones Parking Lot while students remain in their car. Students will not be allowed to exit their car without a temperature check.
Per Regis Handbook Policy, if a student has a temperature of 100.0 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, he will not be allowed to exit the vehicle. Students must be fever free for at least 24 hours before returning to campus.
3 Pre-K and 4 Pre-K Students will proceed directly to their classrooms through the Milestones Building front door. Kindergarten students will proceed through the gate near the Milestones entrance, across the playground and to the Kelley Building, directly to their classrooms. Faculty members will be stationed throughout the hallways and playground to help direct students to their classrooms.

LATE ARRIVERS
All students who arrive late must enter via the Milestones Carpool Line. Students may not exit their vehicle without having their temperature checked. Parents must call the front desk when they arrive at the Milestones Building, and a staff member will come to the car to check the student’s temperature and provide a tardy slip. Students in Kindergarten through 8th grade will then proceed through the gate across the playground to go to their classrooms. Pre-K students will enter through the Milestones lobby. If a student is dropped off without a temperature check, the parent will be called and asked to return to the carpool line until the student’s temperature can be taken while he is in the vehicle.
AFTERNOON CARPOOL – EARLY CHILDHOOD + KINDERGARTEN
Carpool will take place in the Milestones Carpool Line beginning at 3:00PM for 3 Pre-K and 4 Pre-K students and at 3:20PM for Kindergarten students. 3 Pre-K and 4 Pre-K students will remain in their classrooms until they are ‘called’ via the interactive whiteboard to proceed to the carpool line. Early Childhood aids will assist in directing students to the carpool line through the Milestones lobby.
Kindergarten students will be socially distanced outside of the Milestones lobby (weather permitting) and will proceed to their cars when their parents arrive to the front of the carpool line.
If a 3 Pre-K or 4 Pre-K student has a sibling in 1st through 8th grade, he will remain in his classroom until he and his siblings are ‘called’ via the interactive whiteboard to proceed to the Whispering Pines Carpool Line.
If a Kindergarten student has a sibling in 1st through 8th grade, he will proceed directly to the Miller Family Student Life Center when Kindergarten leaves their classroom for carpool in the Milestones Carpool Line. Parents should wait until they are in one of the designated spots before allowing their son(s) to enter your vehicle. Students will need to open their own car door.
Morning Assembly, Mass & Prayer Services
Morning assembly is an important part of The Regis Experience and will continue via live stream at 8:00AM to each individual classroom starting September 14 and then throughout the remainder of the 2020-21 school year. All masses and prayer services will be conducted virtually as well. In the event of a change in limitations on group gatherings, Regis will reassess the possibility of all-community masses and prayer services and maintain proper distancing guidelines at that time.
In the Classroom
Regis will operate a 'cohort' model, where homerooms or cohort groups will stay together throughout the school day, with extremely limited interaction with other cohort groups on campus. Cohort groups will be announced prior to the first day of school.
Early Childhood and Lower School students will stay in their homeroom for the semester, with teachers rotating into the appropriate classroom throughout the day. Middle School students will be assigned to a designated classroom, with teachers rotating into the appropriate classroom throughout the day. Ancillary teachers will travel with supplies to the cohort groups to provide prepared lessons. All instructors will be required to wear a mask and teach behind plexiglass to limit the risk of exposure of both the instructor and the students.
Hand sanitizing stations will be placed outside of each classroom door, and all students, faculty and staff will be required to sanitize their hands before entering a classroom.
EARLY CHILDHOOD & KINDERGARTEN
3 Pre-K, 4 Pre-K and Kindergarten students will sit at tables with a maximum of four students per table with plexiglass barriers separating each student. Shared items will be surface-cleaned continuously throughout the day and thoroughly cleaned after dismissal. While in the classroom, Pre-K students and teachers will be required to wear masks. Students will be able to take off their masks during snack time, lunchtime, outdoor recess and outdoor P.E.
LOWER SCHOOL – 1ST-4TH GRADE
Lower School students will be seated at assigned desks spaced 6ft apart in their classroom. Students will keep their backpack, supplies and all books needed with them at their desks. All classrooms will accommodate the recommended social distancing guidelines. Shared items will be surface-cleaned continuously throughout the day and thoroughly cleaned after dismissal. While in the classroom, Lower School students and teachers will be required to wear masks. Students will be able to take off their masks during snack time, lunchtime, outdoor recess and outdoor P.E.
MIDDLE SCHOOL
Middle School students will be seated at desks spaced 6ft apart in their classroom. Students will keep their backpack, supplies and all books needed with them at their designated assigned desks. Lockers will not be used. For 6th through 8th grade students, extension cords will be available for students to charge their laptop at their desk when necessary. All MS classrooms also will accommodate the recommended social distancing guidelines. While in the classroom, Middle School students and teachers will be required to wear masks. Students will be able to take off their masks during snack time, lunchtime, outdoor recess and outdoor P.E.
Lunch
For the 2020-21 school year, the Regis cafeteria will be closed and students will eat lunch in their classroom. There will be no cafeteria service or access to microwaves during the first semester (August – December), with the possibility for a box lunch service option for the second semester (January – May).
Homeroom/1st Period teachers will conduct lunch checks at the beginning of the day. If your son has forgotten his lunch, Regis will have emergency lunch options on hand for those students. While lunch service is closed, parents will be allowed to drop off forgotten lunches left at home. Per Regis Handbook Policy, fast food is still prohibited for students on campus unless it is your son’s birthday. Parents are allowed to drop off a special lunch for their son on his birthday, but the parent cannot stay for lunch.
At the conclusion of the lunch periods, custodial staff will travel throughout the building to wipe down surfaces and clear away all trash. Students will also wipe down their designated desks and chairs to maintain a clean surface.
Water Fountains & Filling Stations
Drinking fountains will be unavailable at the start of the 2020-21 school year. If the state of the pandemic changes in our region, the school will reassess this policy at that time.
Water bottle filling stations will be available. Students should bring their own labeled water bottle to school with them each day. Water spouts on fountains will be protectively covered and inaccessible to all on campus.
Bathroom Use
Each grade level will be assigned a specific bathroom for use throughout the day, with a maximum of 3 students in the bathroom at any one time. There will be Velcro spots outside each bathroom door for students to adhere their class pass to the bathroom. If all three spots are filled, students will wait until another student exits the bathroom.
Bathrooms will be thoroughly cleaned periodically throughout the day. Students will be required to sanitize their hands upon reentry to their classroom. A touchless hand sanitizing system will be in place outside of each class/cohort group’s classroom door. Posted signs will be present to encourage approved cleaning practices and social distancing as visual reminders.

Recess & Physical Education
As an all-boys school, Regis recognizes the importance of frequent movement throughout the day. The school will be implementing staggered recess and physical education schedules to accommodate this important time outside of the classroom in each grade level while maintaining proper social distancing guidelines. Each cohort group will have designated recess zones and a set of recess equipment that will be used only by this group.
Individual cohort recess schedules can be found in the Veracross Parent Portal closer to the start of the school year.
Nurse/Clinic Visits
In the event a student needs to visit the school nurse, their teacher will call the clinic. The school nurse will travel to the individual classroom to consult with the student or address other symptoms if need be. Homeroom/Cohort Teachers will have first aid kits available in their classrooms to address minor first aid needs of students.*
*Please refer to the “Suspected Symptoms of COVID-19 on Campus” for detailed information about students showcasing symptoms during the school day.
Campus Cleaning Plan
Regis will have three full-time members of the facilities team on campus at all times throughout the school day. These team members will clean and sanitize bathrooms, door handles, playground equipment and high-traffic areas consistently throughout the school day.
Classrooms will have ample cleaning supplies readily on hand for teachers and students, along with air purifiers and filters to provide continuous clean air. All classroom entrances will have touchless sanitizing stations.
Nighttime cleaning crews will clean and sanitize all classrooms, bathrooms, offices and the school clinic with FDA approved cleansers and cleaning products.
Quarterly deep-cleaning of the entire campus will be conducted by our fully-licensed contracted professional cleaning company to ensure added cleanliness consistently throughout the campus.
Visitor Policy
Regis will establish a NO ON-CAMPUS VISITORS policy for the beginning of the 2020-21 school year. If the state of the pandemic changes in our region, the school will reassess this policy at that time.*
Parents who are coming onto campus to pick their son(s) up for appointments, etc. must enter through the Milestones Lobby. Please ring the bell, and the receptionist will open the door for you. Before entering the lobby, the receptionist will conduct a temperature check. There can be a maximum of 4 people in the lobby at any one time, including the receptionist.
All deliveries to school will be left outside the Milestones Lobby Door.
*Note: special pre-arranged parent/faculty, PA, Board and volunteer meetings must meet all mask, hygiene and social distancing guidelines if a campus gathering is necessary. These meetings must be approved by the Head of School.
Before & After School Care
Before school care will begin at 7:00AM. Students arriving for before care will stay in one location, socially distanced, until 7:30AM when they will go to their homeroom/cohort classroom. More information regarding drop-off location for before school care will be available closer to the beginning of the school year.
iKids U will be offering after-school care, with designated spaces for each age group. More information regarding the iKids U program is available here.
Social and Emotional Care & Concern
How should I prepare my son for a return to Regis?
The return to on-campus learning will be different and an adjustment for all students, faculty and staff. Talk to your son about why things will be different and how Regis faculty and staff will keep them safe and secure. The school’s counselor, along with the faculty, will provide the boys with age-appropriate lessons explaining the virus and what we can do to stay safe. Social distancing guidelines will be observed and honored by the counselor to structure these moments with confidentiality in mind.
After School Sports
Suspected Symptoms of COVID-19 on Campus
Teachers will be trained to recognize symptoms of COVID-19 and will immediately separate a student from his class/cohort group if symptoms are identified. The teacher will ask the student to gather their items, and the two will step outside of the classroom door for a temperature check. The teacher will call the nurse to meet the student outside of the classroom to assess symptoms.
Following Texas Medical Association Guidelines, if the nurse deems it necessary for the student to go home, she will escort the student to the designated division-level quarantine room* where she will then call the student’s parents to ask them to pick up the student, and she will wait with the student until his parents arrive.
*The 3 Pre-K & 4 Pre-K Quarantine Room is in the Milestones Building near the Whispering Pines Carpool Line, providing the student with easy access to exit the building. Parents picking up their sons from the quarantine room will be advised to pick up in the Whispering Pines Carpool Line. The Kindergarten through 8th grade Quarantine Room is in the Kelley Building, Room 2111, providing the student with easy access to exit the building. Parents picking up their sons from the quarantine room will be advised to pick them up in the Milestones Parking Lot, immediately to the right upon entering the parking lot.
Students sent home with suspected symptoms will be advised to get tested for COVID-19. The mode of testing is at the discretion of the student’s parents. Parents should notify the school of the student’s test results when they are received.
Students in that particular cohort group will remain on campus for the remainder of the day, and instructors will assess whether any other students in that cohort group present symptoms. An email will be sent to that cohort group’s parents, stating that the cohort group will enter into Remote Learning for the remainder of the week to ensure no other symptoms manifest in that particular cohort group.
Response in Event of Exposure
If a student tests positive for COVID-19 while outside of school hours, all families in that students' cohort group will be notified via a phone call, email or text message not to come to school that day/the next day. This cohort group will move into Remote Learning until they are able to return to campus.
If a student has a family member who has tested positive or if a student has come into close contact with an individual who has tested positive, he will be required to move into At-Home Learning while he quarantines for 14 days since last contact with the positive individual.
In the event the school is notified of a positive test while students are on campus, all parents for that specific cohort group will be contacted either via phone call, email or text message to come pick up their students, and the cohort group will remain in their classroom until they can be picked up. Regis will then follow the guidance of Harris County/Houston Health Department officials in determining next steps on a case-by-case basis and communicate this with the cohort group. Regis will also notify the entire school community of a positive diagnosis in the community but will not identify the student or family in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
Regis will close off areas that are heavily used by the individual with the lab-confirmed case (student, teacher or staff), including the cohort classroom, until the non-porous surfaces in those areas can be disinfected, unless more than 7 days have already passed since that person was on campus.
Before a student may return to campus after exposure and quarantine, parents must communicate with our nurses and administration.
PER TEXAS EDUCATION AGENCY (TEA) GUIDELINES:
Any individuals who themselves either: (a) are lab-confirmed to have COVID-19; or (b) experience the symptoms of COVID-19 (listed below) must stay at home throughout the infection period and cannot return to campus until the school system screens the individual to determine any of the below conditions for campus re-entry have been met:
- In the case of an individual who was diagnosed with COVID-19, the individual may return to school when all three of the following criteria are met:
- at least one day (24 hours) has passed since recovery (resolution of fever without the use of fever-reducing medications);
- the individual has improvement in symptoms (e.g., cough, shortness of breath); and
- at least ten days have passed since symptoms first appeared.
- In the case of an individual who has symptoms that could be COVID-19 and who is not evaluated by a medical professional or tested for COVID-19, such individual is assumed have COVID-19, and the individual may not return to the campus until the individual has completed the same three-step set of criteria listed above.
- If the individual has symptoms that could be COVID-19 and wants to return to school before completing the above stay at home period, the individual must either (a) obtain a medical professional’s note clearing the individual for return based on an alternative diagnosis or (b) obtain an acute infection test at an approved testing location (https://tdem.texas.gov/covid-19/) that comes back negative for COVID-19.
Regis will follow Harris County/Houston Health Department guidelines with positive diagnoses and evaluate each incident on a case-by-case basis.
Once again please refer here for CDC guidelines: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/if-you-are-sick/end-home-isolation.html
COVID-19 Symptoms
In evaluating whether a student has symptoms consistent with COVID-19, Regis teachers and the nurse will ask the following question:
Has the student recently begun experiencing any of the following in a way that is not normal for them?
- Feeling feverish or a measured temperature greater than or equal to 100.0 degrees Fahrenheit
- Loss of taste or smell
- Cough
- Difficulty breathing
- Shortness of breath
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Chills
- Sore throat
- Congestion or runny nose
- Shaking or exaggerated shivering
- Significant muscle pain or ache
- Diarrhea
- Nausea or vomiting
