Spiritual Life

Faith in God is the foundation of a Sacred Heart education.

As an Independent, Catholic school for boys of all faiths, we seek to assist our students in developing their own personal faith as well as cultivating an understanding of and deep respect for the religions of the world. 

Inspired by Sacred Heart Goal I (to educate to a personal and active faith in God), Regis nurtures its students in the Catholic faith, instills values and teaches spirituality in a secure, responsive environment much like that of an extended family.

Regis families are encouraged to actively participate in this faith journey. 

Ways We Celebrate Our Faith

Berchmans' Brothers Altar Boy Society

The Berchmans’ Brothers Altar Boy Society helps Regis boys grow in their faith, in their sanctification, and to build community around the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. Students participate in trainings and develop their spiritual life as they assist the priests throughout the year in Regis Masses. All Middle School boys are welcome to join this program which is led by the Middle School religion faculty.

As part of our Religion classes, students regularly visit the Chapel in the Milestones Building where they pray the rosary, say the Stations of the Cross, engage in prayer, and meditation.

Reflection and being mindful is an important aspect of Sacred Heart education. Each morning, our students join for morning prayer assembly and observe a moment of espacio, meaning "space" in Spanish. These few minutes are meant to be a time for each of our students, faculty, and staff members to practice silent reflection and listen for God’s voice. During the Advent and Lenten seasons, students also observe additional espacio each afternoon. St. Madeleine Sophie Barat, foundress of the Society of the Sacred Heart, believed in practicing a contemplative life and our students benefit from this chance to be still in order to reflect and pray.

Regis honors Mary in several special ways throughout the year. In October, the Feast Day Mass for Mater Admirabilis is celebrated with a formal procession in which each boy places a flower at Mater's statue in the Kelley Building. In May, the Regis Parents Association President and her son, crown Mary during the annual Mother-Son Mass. Throughout the months of October and May, Regis boys practice a Marian virtue. Each day, one student in each class is recognized as earning the Mater Medal for practicing the Marian virtue.

Throughout the school year, the Regis community celebrates mass on the first Friday and third Friday of the month, in addition to celebrating the following Eucharistic liturgies:

  • St. Madeleine Sophie Barat, Society of the Sacred Heart foundress 
  • St. Rose Philippine Duchesne, who brought the mission of the Society of the Sacred Heart to America 
  • St. John Francis Regis, St. Philippine Duchesne’s favorite saint and namesake of our school 
  • Mater Admirabilis, another name for our Blessed Lady, the Mother of God, special to Sacred Heart Schools
  • Mass of the Holy Spirit 
  • All Saints Day 
  • Feast of the Immaculate Conception 
  • Feast of the Epiphany 
  • Ash Wednesday 
  • Easter Mass 
  • Father-Son Mass 
  • Mother-Son Mass 

As an Independent, Catholic school, Regis has the honor of inviting priests throughout the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston to celebrate mass with our community.

Throughout the school year, different grade levels sign up to lead the community in a prayer service celebrating the following: 

  • Patriot Day in Remembrance of 9/11

Religious Formation

Religious Formation

Regis provides an authentic and tangible Catholic Religion program for boys of all faiths. We give our students the opportunity to practice and live what they pray about and learn in their classrooms. Every Regis student takes Religion class, engaging them in religion curriculum that offers them an experience that will nurture each boy’s heart and spirit. 

 

Our curriculum includes opportunities to learn how to pray the Rosary, participate in Reconciliation, observe Stations of the Cross, and more.

Season of Advent

During Advent, Regis prepares for the birth of Jesus in many ways. Daily, there is an additional time for espacio to engage in silent prayer and meditation. At morning prayer, Regis celebrates the Old Testament descendants that prefigure the arrival of Jesus through the tradition of the Jesse Tree. The Advent Wreath is also part of the morning prayer during the weeks preceding Christmas. Regis students also have the opportunity to participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation during Advent.

Season of Lent

During Lent, Regis provides multiple formation experiences for our boys to engage in praying, fasting, and giving to others. Activities include:

  • Ash Wednesday Retreat and Pilgrimage to Our Lady of Walsingham Church
  • Ash Wednesday Rice Bowl Observance
  • Daily Espacio
  • Seminarian Speaker Series
     

During Holy Week there are additional formation experiences offered to students including:

  • Stations of the Cross for Lower School and Eighth Grade students
  • Reconciliation 
  • Praying the Rosary

Prayer Intentions

Required

Members of The Regis School of the Sacred Heart Community are invited to share intentions for prayer. These prayers will be added to our prayer intention book and prayed for daily at morning prayer and at our community masses.
