Lower School at Regis

The Regis curriculum is thoughtful, responsive, deliberate and custom. Our unique boy-centered curriculum allows teachers the latitude to choose learning experiences that are specific to boys. From the selection of topics, projects and classroom materials to the arrangement of classroom furniture to the pedagogy, faculty create an environment where The Regis Experience thrives.

Regis Lower School students have P.E. daily. In addition to this, boys have the opportunity to participate in morning recess before the school day begins and have a break and recess incorporated into their daily schedule as well. 

Movement is not confined to the outdoors at Regis. In the spirit of Goal V, boys are encouraged to move within the classroom as an aid to their learning experience. Classroom instruction is designed for this freedom of movement, whether it be working in small groups, rearranging classroom furniture to best suit the lesson at hand or participating in lessons while sitting on the floor or in flexible seating.

The Morning Meeting occurs for the first 15 minutes of each school day. This meeting is an engaging and purposeful way for the boys to start their day. 

Morning Meeting consists of four sequential components: greeting, sharing, group activity and morning message. This time allows for constructive conversations about what is happening within the classroom while preparing the boys for the day ahead. The framework and frequency aids in building a strong sense of community (Goal IV) and lays the foundation for social and academic success (Goal II). Additionally, these structured conversations are an inclusive way for the boys to practice listening, expressing their thoughts, paying attention and participating in cooperative interaction (Goal V). 

Examples of questions explored in Morning Meeting:
• If you could make one rule that everyone in the world had to follow, what rule would you make? Why?
• What makes you feel loved?
• What would you do if you made the rules at home?
• What makes you happy?
• If you were a teacher, and the kids in your class would not listen to you, what would you do?

All Lower School students take Spanish class taught by a native speaker as one of their ancillaries. The objective of the class is to introduce the students to the Spanish language and to present lessons and strategies that motivate them to love learning a second language. Studies show that children who are exposed to a second language at a young age have significant cognitive advantages and it facilitates later learning.

Lower School MakerSpace and Technology introduces students to the Engineering Design Process to plan, create, test and improve projects. Technology implemented in the class exposes Lower School students to a variety of uses and ways to apply and showcase their learning.
